Breakup movies are a dime a dozen. But when in the right hands, they have the power to cut like a knife and stay with you long after the last verbal sparring match stops ringing in your ears. Writer-director Noah Baumbach – who explored domestic strife in his 2005 Oscar-nominated film The Squid and the Whale – is back with perhaps his most accomplished and mature feat yet.
In Marriage Story, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson star as a show biz couple at their end of their rope. From the very start of the film, the pair have already decided to end their relationship. But with a kid involved, things aren’t as easy as just heading their separate ways. As a fierce custody battle ensues, what was intended as an amicable split pushes the two to their breaking point.
A magnificent career highlight for both Driver and Johansson, Marriage Story will wallop you with emotional highs and lows. This is a picture that is poised to take the Oscars by storm, as Baumbach exposes us to the crushing imprint of divorce in a way that’s heated, heartbreaking, and bracingly reflective.
